(2) Ryota's One-Point Advice: The Science of Dining Etiquette
Did you know that slurping noodles in Japan is not bad manners? Actually, there is a scientific reason behind it!
1. Why We Slurp (The Aeration Effect)
Scientifically speaking, this is exactly the same as wine tasting! By bringing air into your mouth along with the noodles and Dashi, you create an "aeration effect." This maximizes the "retronasal aroma" (the flavor that goes up your nose), making the taste explode and feel much stronger.
2. Why We Drink Soup Directly from the Bowl
Instead of using a spoon, bringing your face close to the bowl allows you to directly feel the delicate steam and the rich aroma of the Dashi. It is the most logical way to fully appreciate the magic of the soup!
3. Why We Never Stick Chopsticks in Rice
Wait! Never stick your chopsticks upright in your rice. This is not about science; it is a funeral ritual in Japan. It is a strict cultural NO!
